Abstract: The energy independence need and the concern of our environment has led to an increasing demand investment in renewable energy and their sources. Under Directive 2009/28/EC on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources, the European Union (EU) has set the goal to reach a 20 % renewable energy by the end of 2020. Moreover, within 2030 framework for climate and energy (COM/2014/015) agreed on EU´s long-term commitment target of at least 27 % for the share of renewable energy consumed in the EU in 2030. Consequently with increasing of combustion of biomass in the energy production, the amount of ash derived from biomass combustion is also increasing. These significant quantities of ash requires its sustainable management. One of possible solution for its management is utilization of wood biomass ash (WBA) in the construction industry. This paper describes problems regarding WBA management, review of WBA properties and preliminary results of testing mechanical properties (compressive and flexural strength) of cement composites made with WBA in different amounts per cement mass.

Sažetak: Potreba za energetskom neovisnošću s jedne te pritisci na okoliš s druge strane doveli su do povećane potražnje i ulaganja u obnovljive izvore energije. Europska unija je postavila cilj da udio obnovljivih izvora energije u ukupnoj energetskoj potrošnji bude 20 % do 2020. godine (Direktiva o korištenju obnovljivih izvora energije 2009/28/EC), odnosno 27 % do 2030. godine (Okvir za klimatsku i energetsku politiku u razdoblju 2020. – 2030. godine). Povećanje korištenja biomase kao obnovljivog izvora energije dovelo je do porasta količine pepela čija cijena odlaganja sve više raste. Stoga je potrebno osigurati njegovo održivo i učinkovito gospodarenje. Jedna od mogućnosti održivog gospodarenja pepelom jest njegova primjena u građevinskoj industriji. U radu je prikazana problematika gospodarenja pepelom iz drvne biomase (PDB), osvrt na karakterizaciju PDB-a, te preliminarni rezultati ispitivanja tlačne čvrstoće i čvrstoće na savijanje cementnih kompozita s različitim udjelima PDB-a kao zamjene za cement.
