The Day of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the University of Zagreb will be celebrated in this festive year on 16 October 2019 at the main Vatroslav Lisinski concert hall, in remembrance of the historical beginning of higher education in civil engineering dating back to October 1919 when it all started at the Structural Engineering Division of the Higher School of Engineering in Zagreb. Civil engineering has always been a significant and esteemed human activity and, in Croatia, it has had a long-standing, rich and highly diversified tradition. Our engineers, their engineering solutions, products, and methodologies are well known and recognised worldwide and, here, at the Faculty, we have been continuously developing close ties with business and industry through research & development projects oriented toward innovations and new technologies. As the oldest higher education institution in the field of civil engineering, we have not only the obligation, but also the great pleasure, of continuously attracting attention to this significant and valuable sector of economy, as our engineers have built, are building, and will be building, a wide variety of engineering structures in Croatia and also far beyond its borders.

Sponsorships

The central celebration of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the University of Zagreb will be held under the high auspices of the President of the Republic of Croatia, Mrs Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović. We thank the President for recognizing the importance of this event.

Sponsorship will also be provided by the Speaker of the Croatian Parliament, Mr Gordan Jandroković to whom we are also grateful for this act which supports the activity of great importance for the further construction of the Republic of Croatia.

Civil engineering as a valuable sector in the economy has also been recognized by the Croatian Radiotelevision which will provide media sponsorship of the ceremony.

Significance of civil engineering in the economy of developed countries can be seen in that this branch of economy generates 10 to 12 percent of the gross domestic product, while also strongly influencing almost all changes occurring in the society. In addition, civil engineering has a long-lasting and rich tradition in Croatia, and our civil engineers are known and recognised in all parts of the world. At our Faculty, we have been nurturing close ties with business and industry, principally as we are fully aware that there is no strong economy without a strong faculty and, vice versa, there is no strong faculty if not backed by economy. It is through mutual cooperation that new ideas for research are obtained, which later on result in development of a new technology or an interesting engineering solution, all of which inevitably leads to an increased competitiveness of economic operators and the Faculty.
